Understanding the Costs of STA and How NDIS Funding Works

Short Term Accommodation (STA) provides essential temporary care for participants, offering them a change of environment while giving informal carers much-needed respite. To make the most of STA, it’s important to understand how costs are calculated and how they align with your NDIS funding.

What Does STA Cover?

STA funding is designed to replicate the care participants would usually receive at home. This includes covering meals, personal care, and activities. While these supports aim to maintain routine and comfort, they also often include opportunities to build independence and develop new skills.

Providers may offer various types of STA, from small group accommodations to tailored individual care. However, you may need to shop around to ensure the provider meets your unique needs, such as specific accessibility requirements or dietary accommodations.

How Does NDIS Funding Work for STA?

STA, including respite care, is generally funded under the Core Supports budget within the category of Assistance with Daily Life. If STA is not explicitly included in your plan, you may still access it through your flexible Core Supports budget, provided it meets the “reasonable and necessary” criteria set by the NDIS.

For STA-specific funding, participants typically need to provide evidence to the NDIS, such as a letter from a healthcare professional or informal carers highlighting the need for respite. This funding is especially relevant when STA:

  • Enables carers to continue providing support long-term.

  • Improves participants’ functional capacity or independence.

  • Reduces the need for more intensive support in the future.

Key Factors That Impact STA Costs

The cost of STA depends on several variables, including:

  • Time of Use: Weekends, public holidays, and night care often incur higher rates.

  • Location: Remote and very remote areas typically have additional costs.

  • Group vs. Individual Care: Most STA is funded for group settings, which are more economical than one-on-one support.

While all providers must adhere to NDIS price limits, these factors can significantly affect your budget. It’s vital to plan strategically and ensure your Core Supports funding lasts the duration of your NDIS plan.

Choosing the Right STA Provider

Selecting an STA provider involves more than comparing costs. It’s about finding the right fit for your needs and goals. Consider the following when evaluating providers:

  • Are the accommodation facilities suitable for your comfort and accessibility needs?

  • What types of activities are offered, and do they align with your goals?

  • If sharing the space with others, who are the other participants?

  • Does the provider accommodate specific requirements, such as dietary needs or additional personal care?

A good provider should offer more than basic care—they should support your growth, independence, and overall well-being during your stay.
