Understanding the cost of NDIS respite care can feel uncertain when you're seeing different prices, different funding levels, and hearing people talk about "inclusions" and "gaps." Many families and support coordinators want to know what NDIS respite care actually costs, what's covered by plan funding, when there might be out-of-pocket expenses, and how to plan a respite stay that fits the budget. This guide explains NDIS respite care costs clearly, what funding usually covers, and how to plan respite that's realistic for your budget.
How NDIS Respite Care Pricing Works
NDIS respite care is priced according to the NDIS Pricing Arrangements—a national price list that sets standard rates for most types of support. The NDIS does not allow providers to charge more than these approved prices for respite care.
The cost of respite care depends on several factors:
Type of Respite
In-home respite (support worker at home) is usually priced by the hour. Residential respite (participant stays at a facility) is usually priced per night or per day. Day program respite is often priced per session or per day.
Level of Support Needed
Respite pricing has different tiers based on the participant's support needs. A participant requiring high support (one-to-one assistance, behaviour support, specialist care) is charged at a higher tier than a participant needing standard support. Examples:
Standard support (general supervision): one price per night
High support (one-to-one, personal care, medication management): higher price per night
Specialist support (behaviour support, disability-specific expertise): additional charges may apply
Geographic Location
Respite costs can differ between regions. Gold Coast and other regional locations may have different pricing from capital cities. The NDIS Pricing Arrangements list rates by location.
Duration of Respite
Respite is priced per day or night, so longer stays cost more. A 7-night stay costs more than a 2-night stay.
Accommodation and Meals
If the respite is residential, accommodation and meal costs are usually included in the daily/nightly rate. If the respite is in-home, meal costs may or may not be included.
What's Typically Included in NDIS Respite Care Pricing
A typical daily or nightly respite rate includes:
Support worker fees and supervision
Accommodation (for residential respite)
Meals and snacks (for residential respite)
Utilities (for residential respite)
Basic activities and community access
Housekeeping and laundry (for residential respite)
Basic safety equipment and monitoring
What is NOT typically included in standard NDIS respite pricing:
High-cost recreational activities (e.g., theme parks, sporting events)
Specialist external services (e.g., physiotherapy, speech therapy during respite)
Additional accommodation for family members accompanying the participant
Travel to external activities beyond local community access
higher-cost or upgraded facilities or services
How Much Does NDIS Respite Care Cost? Examples
Approximate costs (these vary by location and provider; check current NDIS Pricing Arrangements for your area):
In-Home Respite
Standard support: $45–$65 per hour
High support: $60–$85 per hour
A full day (8 hours): $360–$680
Overnight support (12 hours): $540–$1,020
Residential Respite (per night)
Standard support: $250–$400 per night
High support: $350–$550 per night
A 5-night stay (standard support): $1,250–$2,000
A 5-night stay (high support): $1,750–$2,750
Day Program Respite
Per session: $50–$150
Full day program (6 hours): $120–$300
These are approximate ranges. Actual costs depend on:
The provider
The participant's support tier
The location
Current NDIS pricing updates
Special services or support needed
Always ask providers for specific quotes based on the participant's needs.
How Much Respite Funding Is in an Actual NDIS Plan?
The amount of respite funding in an NDIS plan varies widely depending on the participant's situation. Examples:
Participant A
Plan includes: $3,000 per year for respite
This might cover: Two 5-night residential respite stays per year (standard support)
Participant B
Plan includes: $6,000 per year for respite
This might cover: Four 5-night residential respite stays per year OR ten 8-hour in-home respite days per month
Participant C
Plan includes: $1,500 per year for respite
This might cover: One 5-night residential respite stay per year, or several shorter stays
Participant D
Plan includes: No respite funding (respite can be added at plan review if goals align)
Plan funding amounts are set during plan development or plan review based on:
The participant's goals (does respite align with their goals?)
Carer needs and wellbeing (is respite needed to support family sustainability?)
Available funding in the plan (is there budget for respite after other supports are funded?)
The participant's preferences and circumstances
Out-of-Pocket Costs: When You Might Pay Extra
In many cases, if the participant has respite funding in their plan and books with an NDIS-approved provider, the main respite costs are claimed against the NDIS plan directly rather than paid privately by the family.
Out-of-pocket costs MAY occur if:
The Participant Uses More Respite Than Funded
If the plan includes $3,000 per year for respite and you use a $400-per-night facility for 10 nights per year (= $4,000), the extra $1,000 may be out-of-pocket. This can often be avoided by planning respite within budget.
The Provider Charges Above the NDIS Price
NDIS-approved providers cannot charge more than NDIS Pricing Arrangements allow. If you use a non-NDIS provider or a private facility, costs may be higher and out-of-pocket.
Special Requests or Add-Ons
If you request services beyond what's in the plan (e.g., private accommodation for accompanying family, special activities), these may incur additional costs.
Family Payment to Accompany the Participant
If a family member wants to stay at the facility alongside the participant, accommodation and meal costs for that family member are usually not covered and may be out-of-pocket.
How to Plan Respite Within Budget
Step 1: Know Your Plan Funding
Get a copy of the plan and find the exact respite funding amount and any rules about usage.
Step 2: Know the Cost Per Day/Night
Contact providers and ask for their exact cost per night or day for the participant's support level. Get quotes in writing.
Step 3: Calculate What Fits
Use math to work backwards from your annual budget:
Annual respite budget ÷ cost per night = number of nights possible per year
Example: $3,000 ÷ $300 per night = 10 nights per year
Example: $3,000 ÷ $100 per day (day program) = 30 days per year
Step 4: Plan Respite Stays Strategically
Decide:
How many respite stays per year make sense?
What length of stays? (e.g., four 7-night stays vs. six 4-night stays?)
When in the year? (spread throughout year, or cluster in known difficult periods?)
What type of respite? (in-home is often cheaper than residential)
Step 5: Request a Quote
Ask the provider for a detailed quote including:
Cost per night/day for the participant's support level
Dates and duration of proposed respite
Total cost
What's included (meals, activities, accommodation)
Any add-on costs
Step 6: Check With Your Support Coordinator
Before booking, confirm with the support coordinator or plan manager:
The booking fits within plan funding
There are no plan rules that would prevent this booking
How payment will happen (provider bills NDIS or you pay and claim)
Any funding balance left for the rest of the year
Step 7: Book and Arrange
Once confirmed, book with the provider and finalise all details.
Reducing Respite Costs Without Reducing Quality
Consider these options to maximise respite benefit within budget:
Use In-Home Respite for Shorter, Regular Breaks
In-home respite is often cheaper per hour and allows flexibility. Regular weekend visits from a support worker might cost less than fewer longer residential stays.
Mix Respite Types
Combine in-home respite with occasional residential respite. This spreads funding further while still providing a change of environment periodically.
Use Day Program Respite
Day programs and group activities are often lower-cost respite options that still provide community participation and new experiences.
Plan Longer Stays
Sometimes, fewer longer stays (e.g., two 7-night stays) are cheaper overall than many short stays (e.g., seven 2-night stays), because of setup and handover costs.
Share Respite
Some providers offer group respite (multiple participants at one facility). Group respite is often cheaper than individual one-to-one respite.
Plan in Advance
Booking respite well in advance (2–3 months) sometimes allows providers to offer better rates.
What to Ask Providers About Cost
When getting quotes, ask:
What is your exact rate per night/day for this participant's support level?
Are accommodation, meals, and activities included in this rate?
What is NOT included (and might cost extra)?
Are there any add-on fees (transport, specialist support, activities)?
Do you offer any discounts for longer bookings or group respite?
Is the price fixed, or does it vary by season?
Can we get a detailed quote before committing?
Funding Changes and Plan Reviews
At the participant's NDIS plan review (yearly or every 3 years), respite funding can be adjusted. If the current funding is not enough:
Ask the support coordinator to discuss respite in the plan review
Explain how the participant has benefited from respite
Share how the current funding limits respite frequency
Ask whether additional respite funding could be included in the new plan
If respite is useful and goals-aligned, funding can often be increased at review.
Next Steps
If the participant wants to explore respite but you're uncertain about costs or what fits the budget, check our respite care services or reach out to Visionary Respite and Care. We can discuss the participant's needs, explain costs and options specific to their situation, and help plan respite that works within the available funding.
How NDIS Funding Usually Applies
Where respite is included in the participant's plan, costs are generally claimed against that funding, but the total amount used depends on the service model being booked. Stay length, support intensity, location, and provider setup can all change the final figure.
For cost planning, the important step is not just checking whether respite is funded. It is checking how quickly that funding may be used under the specific quote you are considering.
What Quality Support Usually Looks Like
When comparing respite pricing, quality support usually includes:
transparent explanations of what is included in the quoted cost and what is not
pricing that reflects the participant's actual support needs rather than a vague package label
staff capability that matches the participant's complexity and care requirements
clear communication about billing, claim pathways, and any optional extras
review of value, fit, and outcomes, not just the headline price

FAQ
Does NDIS respite funding carry over if unused?
This depends on the plan. Some NDIS plans allow funding to roll over; others reset each year. Check the plan document or ask the support coordinator.
What if the participant's respite needs change mid-year?
Changes can be requested at a plan change discussion (doesn't require waiting for annual review). Explain why respite needs have changed, and a plan update may be made.
Can respite funding be used for something else if respite isn't needed?
Respite funding is usually allocated specifically for respite care. It typically cannot be converted to other supports. However, if respite will never be used, this can be discussed at plan review and funding reallocated.
What if we find a provider cheaper than the NDIS price?
If a provider is charging below NDIS Pricing Arrangements, that's fine. You'll use less of the plan funding and have funding remaining for future respite.
Are there any government grants or subsidies for respite on top of NDIS funding?
Most NDIS participants' primary respite funding comes from the plan. Carer Gateway may fund additional respite for carers. State-based additional support sometimes exists. Check with your support coordinator.
